Alan’s Front Yard June 26

It has been just over a month since I started working on Alan’s garden. With only a couple exceptions everything is doing well. You can see the start of this progress on Alan’s Front Yard May 22.

You can see Alan’s dog Cooper peeking over the porch railing. Hi Cooper!

These evergreen shrubs  surrounded by hostas are called ‘Emerald Gaeity’ and are doing well. You can see more about them at Alan’s Front Yard May 25.

I planted vinca along the retaining wall as ground cover. It's starting to spread out nicely. You can see a variegated one in the middle of the photo reaching for the edge.

You can barely see the two ‘Hot Lips’ salvias at the top of the retaining wall next to the house. The shrubs from the street are too tall. I think I'll have to replace them with something a bit taller.

I planted the astilbe and later added two calla lilies. Behind the astilbe is a white calla and to the back and right is a dark purple calla. The lilies don’t look happy as they start to yellow. I think I will remove them.

At the top of the stairs I replaced two of the old hostas with ‘Cherry Berry’ hostas.

The old hosta.

This hosta had some stippling damage to its leaves. Bruce, the Koida Nursery Pest Specialist, thought thrips may be the cause, but I didn’t see any.

The ‘Cherry Berry.’ You can also see the oxalis behind it and the three pots leading up to the porch I planted.

The pot on the left has a ‘Gryphon’ begonia, impatiens and an asparagus fern in it. In the back corner of the porch is another pot.

This pot with the potato vine sits on the porch railing.

With the exception of a couple plants everything looks great in Alan’s Front Yard. Next we will take a look at Alan’s backyard. Bye Cooper!
