Shaun’s Vegetable Garden

July 8

So far we have seen Shaun’s Containers and his Perennial Shade Garden. Today we’ll look at his Vegetable Garden. The entrance to the Vegetable Garden is framed by a trellis and graced with two smaller perennial beds containing herbs and flowers.

There is a lot of life compacted into these small beds. Like other areas in his gardens he has liatris and Asiatic lily. Here you can also find day lily, garlic, echinacea, rosemary, balloon flower, oregano, thyme, lavender, mint and Centaurea montana.

Bronze fennel frames each side of the Vegetable Garden trellis.

The Vegetable Garden grows in raised beds surrounded by a sea of hazelnut shells.

This raised bed contains the Three Sisters concept of planting with ‘Early American Squash, cucumber, on the bottom, Scarlet Runner beans that grow up the corn stalks with an orange blossom and Indian corn; a decorative corn, to be used for fall decoration. Shaun employs his favorite odds of three here with three different plants. Beans provide nitrogen for the soil and work as stabilizers for the corn while the squash provides shade to prevent weed growth and moisture evaporation and mulch later in the season.

Basil, tomatoes and peppers grow in this bed.

Tomatoes and eggplant grow in this bed and in the future carrots will grow to the left.
